A constituent asked me this week about overnight parking on city streets. Since we recently made some changes to De Pere’s parking ordinance, I figure I’d explain the rules. Parking is not allowed on city streets between 2am and 5am, Monday through Friday. That’s the general rule, all year (nothing special for winter). This means that you can park on the street on a Friday evening (actually any time after 5am Friday morning), and you can leave it there all weekend (provided you remove by 2am on Monday). If you remember this basic ordinance, you’re all set.
Additionally, we recently added some exceptions allowing us to park on the street the day before, the day of, and the day after the following holidays:
New Years Day, Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day
So, this means that over Christmas, street parking is okay from Dec 23 thru Dec 26. And in real terms, it means you can park your car in the street the evening of Dec 22, and not have to remove it until 2am on Dec 27.
There are other provisions as well, like residents getting special permission from the police department if they are replacing a driveway, or the police department declaring a snow emergency which prohibits street parking during the specified times.
